How do I know if I need mental help?

What is the difference between normal mental health and mental disorders? Sometimes the answer is clear, but often the distinction is not so obvious. A mental disorder may be present when patterns or changes in thinking, feeling, or behavior cause distress or impair a person’s ability to function in their social environment, family, relationship, or social life in general.

Now, you can distinguish that there is a disorder or that something is wrong with your mental state if you have or suffer from the following symptoms and changes in your behavior:

  • Feeling sad or down.
  • Fuzzy thinking or reduced ability to concentrate.
  • Excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt.
  • Mood swings with extreme ups and downs.
  • Withdrawal from friends and activities.
  • Significant tiredness, low energy, or trouble sleeping.
  • Prolonged sadness or irritability
  • Changes in appetite.
  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much.
  • Feeling numb or unable to experience emotions.
  • Helplessness and hopelessness.
  • Severe mood swings.
  • Persistent thoughts that you can’t shut down.
  • Problems in your relationships, such as more fighting or yelling.

If the above symptoms do not improve or appear to be worsening after 2 or more weeks and despite self-care efforts, you should see a provider such as New Focus Mental Health for medical attention and professional help.
